International and ELL Students

Our staff looks forward to welcoming students from around the world, and to providing them with an outstanding high school experience.  Once English language learners arrive at Lillian Osborne, we work to determine their educational needs (level of language support and academic level) and place them accordingly.

For information to apply to Edmonton Public Schools as an international student, use EPSB's International Students page.

Level 1 – Full ELL programming

Students will work in a cohort that is registered in an intensive morning English language program. In the afternoon they are registered in an ELL Math, ELL Science as well as 2 optional courses.  Throughout these courses students will focus on language acquisition (academic language and conversational English).  Once they reach a level of proficiency they will be placed in the level that best reflects their understanding of the curriculum.

Level 2 – Modified ELL programming

In addition to supporting a English language learner’s academic needs, we believe there is a great deal of learning that happens outside of the classroom.  We provide and encourage our International and ELL students to participate in a variety of activities such as the Adventure Edmonton Club, International student’s intramural team, and various other school events such as our Thanksgiving feast and Culturama. Students with an adequate level of English language development will be registered in a modified program.  In this program students will receive additional support in English and Social Studies as well as a course which allows them overall English supports (Learning Strategies).

Level 3 – Regular program

Students with a proficient level of English will be registered in a regular academic program.  These students will be given additional supports for assessments (extended time during exams or assessments, electronic/print translators, etc).

Level 4 – Academic Enrichment

Students who are very proficient in English and have a superior understanding of the curriculum may register in an academic enrichment program (International Baccalaureate) for certain courses. These students will be given additional supports for assessments (extended time during exams or assessments, electronic/print translators, etc).
